Liked: The location Close to Penrith for a nice day out and for shopping while we were away. Close to Ullswater where we spent the day Paddleboarding. Nice half hour walk to Lowther Castle for coffee and cake and little longer to a lovely little village (Askham) for open air swimming.
Site cleanliness The whole site was spotless, we spent some time swimming in the river which was also lovely and clean. The site is mainly filled with lodges and static caravans and it's clear that they take a lot of pride in the site.
Staff Friendly staff who were more than happy to accommodate. Any query was sorted as soon as possible. They had someone in a golf cart who came round during the day to make sure everything was OK.
Plenty to do on site There were play areas for children and a pub on site which also had a play area alongside. There was also a football pitch close to the camping area. The pub had a pool table and a table tennis table and the outdoor area was a lovely sun trap.
Disliked: The toilets/showering facilities Although they were pleasant and tended to (they were cleaned daily), the toilets were the only downside of the holiday. Unfortunately, sites with camping facilities live and die by the quality of their toilets and these could really do with some help. The male and female toilets had very poor toilet seats, the ladies didn't have a single toilet seat that stayed in place while in use. There was also nothing to clean the toilet after using them which means there were a lot of soiled toilets during the day. The key access for the toilets was so well worn you could use any key to gain access - I think this shows that they need a little TLC.
Tent pitches The camping (grass) area was small in comparison to the size of the site and located in the far corner of the site, near a small forest - this meant the camping pitches were on a bank and parts of it were...

Squirrel Inn was closed on our arrival day (Wed) but open Thur & Fri although we didn't try it. The river going through the park was wonderful for paddling, exploring and catching tadpoles. Size of pitch was good and clmose to the play area and basket ball court which was excellent. Plenty of showers and toilets so never a queue - mostly very well looked after (see disliked below). Showers were hot and plenty of space for dishwashing with hot water. Also a family shower which can fit various age children in with parents and a cubicle with a bath in both the mens and ladies.
Disliked: Our pitch was on a slope - had to turn the tent round a different way to try and make the most of the least sloping area. Looking at the other pitches most weren't like this - we had the worst by far! Toilet block wasn't cleaned for 36 hours - I did report this when we were there as there was a very dirty toilet for that amount of time. I get the impression this was a glitch and they were normally cleaned twice a day with two...

We booked a super pitch and it was a really good size with water and electric on the pitch. We were not far from the toilet block which was kept clean and had lots of dry space in the showers, so clothes didn't get wet. The site was well maintained and the walks around the site and the adjacent countryside were lovely. There is lots to do in the area and local roads were good. It was only a short drive to Penrith and we were easily able to visit local attractions including Ullswater. Staff in the shop, pub and check in areas were all really friendly and welcoming. We would definitely like to return to this site. The on site bakery/ shop served a delicious breakfast and some food in the evening.
Disliked: The water in the wash up area could have done with being a little hotter - it took a long time to come through warm. There was no wifi to the touring pitches, but free wifi was available in the pub. When we booked, a restaurant was advertised on site in the pub, but this was no longer running and food options available...
