British Camp, Malvern Hills, Worcestershire
Postcode for the Malvern Hills Hotel & Restaurant Carpark - WR13 6DW
Postcode for the Carpark located near to the Gullet Quarry - HR8 1EU
British Camp is protected as a 'Sheduled Ancient Monument' that is located at the top of the Herefordshire Beacon in the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire. It was constructed in around 2bc and a Norman Castle was built on the site. The Castle is unfortunately long gone but a couple of the paths have been reconstructed. There is a huge amount of History behind the Fort for anyone that is interested.
The two Carparks (both chargable) have locational advantages, WR13 6DW is closer to British Camp and HR8 1EU is closer to Eastnor Obelisk.
British Camp Carpark has the pub, Sally's Place Takeaway and there are also public toilets. It is only about a 20 minute walk to the top of British Camp.
The Carpark located at HR8 1EU is only a 2 minute walk to the Ruffz Cafe and the Gullet Quarry a little further along the path. There is a lovely grassy area to sit under the cliff here.

British Camp offers 360° views, a great place for sunsets that is well worth a visit whether you want to spend all day walking to the various View points or you want somewhere to spend a...
Read moreA superb Iron Age hill fort enclosing about 18 hectares and exploiting the natural topography with impressive earth defences. Overall a very good example of its type.
There are great views, with the view north along the western flanks of the Malvern Hills presenting an iconic much reproduced view. A walk from here to the Obelisk and back, followed by a drink at The Malvern Hills Hotel makes a lovely afternoon. Summer evenings and low sun angles together with absence of crowds can make this quite magical.
Occasionally one can encounter a lone Red Kite probably from Mid Wales exploring perhaps for territory; there were wild Black Rabbits though haven’t seen one for a while; some skylarks; lots of green woodpeckers generally though the middle section of hills between British Camp and Wyche Cutting, especially on the east side above the tree line is best for these. Lack of cuckoos here this last spring in particular compared to Long Mynd and the Shropshire Hills.
The paths make it accessible but are anachronistic over-developments like the route up to The Beacon and for me somewhat detract from the wildness of it. It clearly makes it more accessible to a wider group of visitors. (Maybe there should be a funicular railway here together with a cable car to The Beacon? and a nice Outlook Cafe when you get there - I might start a campaign - make it more like my native Llandudno and The...
Read moreThe British Camp Hill Fort is a free and open public space available to walkers and mountain bikers and probably horsey types and whatnot too although I haven't seen any. I did see paragliding chaps jumping off somewhere around here one year. Anyway. O have been here before and it is brilliant. There is cheap parking and public toilets at the bottom, as well as an ice cream place and a pub. Both with vegan and veggie options. The climb up to the top of the Fort is served with a broad and well-maintained path, the same as are found all over the Malvern hills. I would very much reccomend coming here for a bracing walk amid some absolutely stunning views of rural England's Severn Valley to the east, and the Welsh Marches to the west. Gorgeous. Been here before. Will be...
