In the rolling Cotswold countryside near Tetbury, Westonbirt, The National Arboretum is one of Britainβs most enchanting natural treasures. With over 2,500 species of trees from all over the world, spread across 600 acres of carefully curated and beautifully maintained landscape, Westonbirt isnβt just an arboretum β itβs a living, breathing gallery of trees.
Whether youβre a seasoned horticulturalist or someone who simply enjoys a peaceful woodland walk, Westonbirt offers something special in every season. Autumn is, famously, its star turn: a riot of crimson, amber, and gold as the Japanese maples and acers explode into colour. But each season has its own magic β spring brings delicate blossoms and new growth, summer invites shaded rambles beneath majestic canopies, and winter reveals the stark, sculptural beauty of bare branches.
The layout is thoughtfully designed, with two main areas to explore: the Old Arboretum, more formal and historic, and Silk Wood, a more naturalistic and dog-friendly zone. The Treetop Walkway is a particular highlight, offering a gently sloping route through the canopy with stunning views β accessible to all ages and abilities.
Westonbirt is also a place of learning and quiet innovation, with conservation projects, seasonal trails for children, and educational signage that enhances rather than overwhelms. Events such as the Enchanted Christmas light trail and various workshops add to its year-round appeal.
Facilities are excellent: there's a spacious cafΓ©, a well-stocked gift shop, picnic areas, and plenty of parking. Everything is clearly signposted and thoughtfully maintained. Itβs an experience that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the natural world.
Verdict: Westonbirt is more than just an arboretum β it's a place of wonder, tranquillity, and seasonal splendour. Whether you're there for a quiet solo stroll, a family day out, or simply to marvel at nature's diversity, it delivers in every sense. A crown jewel in the...
Β Β Β Read moreFor as long as I can remember I've always enjoyed our visits to Westonbirt Arboretum. From our visits nearly 50 years ago with my mum and dad when we were chikdren, to visits with our own children, and then today a visit with my mum.
The colours constantly change, and over the years, I've seen the Arboretum grow and develop to the Arboretum that we see and enjoy today. And this time of the year is undoubtedly one of the best times to see the colours, lovely.
I had the pleasure, over the years, when I worked for the local Constabulary in Cirencester seeing some of the famous and not so famous bands and groups perform at the Arboretum, a tradition that continues today.
The staff are always sp friendly and helpful, as Tracey was today in helping mum with a mobility scooter. The blanket came in really handy as the sun slowly sank behind the trees, setting in the west.
The pathways are clear, easy to navigate, and are so easy to follow. A lovely few hours spent just wandering the pathways, finishing up with a hot chocolate and a biscuit at one of the small outlets that are dotted around the entrance to the Arboretum

Β Β Β Read moreI have often seen photos of Westonbirt on my local news channel (usually Autumn pics). And so decided to go there, albeit in Summertime. The entrance cost was only Β£13 each for adults (weekday), which was done online. Upon arriving, the (free to park) car park was filling up quickly, but we still managed to get into a space. After showing our prepaid details on our phone at the booth, you could go wherever you wanted after that. Dogs are allowed, on leads, but only certain parts of the wooded areas, to protect the trees and plants. They have toilets near the entrance, with a sit down area, before going on your walk. We had a stroll around with a small guided group, who were very knowledgeable. We ended up at a small outdoors picnic area, which had a small shop, selling drinks and snacks. But you can take your own food and drinks, for a cheaper alternative. They also have a restaurant and gift shop onsite. With a full stomach, we proceeded to the treetop walkway, which is no good for those of you, scared of heights! This is a fantastic place to visit, and spent hours here. Taking in the fresh air, nature and bird songs. And of course, it was a beautiful sunny day. Making it the perfect place to visit. Well...
