This amazing structure built by the cromford and high peak railway stands at the top of the 1 in 8. The railway closed in 1963, however during the summer months the engine is run for visitors. To understand how the engine worked it is best to park at the black rock car park and walk up the incline. You can still see to wheel pits at the top and bottom of the steep incline along with some short samples of old rail. There is a near by tea room. If traveling by bus take one of the sixes bus to the top of Cromford hill. Allow about two hours for the wall up the hill and back down. The route of the former railway is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The railway used to link two water ways. Well worth a visit any time of the year. The restored Engine House is really impressive — the volunteers are so knowledgeable and bring the story of the old railway incline to life. The surrounding countryside is stunning, with plenty of walking and cycling trails along the High Peak Trail. There’s good parking, clean facilities, and a little café for refreshments. Read moreGreat visit. Visited when they were running the engine. The two guys were brilliant explaining what was going on. Amazing to think it has been around 200 years and still running today. As an industrial site there are sets of steep and uneven steps so not appropriate for wheel or push chairs. Parking at the visitor center with toilets and basic cafe facilities. Entrance fee payable in the visitor centre....
