Middleton Top Visitor & Cycle Hire Centres — Attraction in Derbyshire Dales

This is a fascinating place in it's own right or as a starting point for great walks and cycle rides! Modest and reasonable charges apply for parking but this is surfaced. There are drinks/light refreshments available on site as is cycle hire. Close by is Middleton Top Engine House where a very early Victorian stationary steam engine is operated upon certain days. Often ride the Tissington and Monsal trails, but do not often venture over to the High Peak trail. Went over to Middleton Top last weekend, but we were both surprised by the high charge (£7) for a days parking (to the extent that we didn't buy a cup of tea to compensate). Parsley Hay and other car parks along the trail are currently less than £5, and this fee should reduce to reflect that. Great place to park for exploring the High Peak Trail. It has plenty of parking, bike hire, free toilets, a cafe and a few picnic benches, all set within beautiful surroundings. It's right next to one of the old engine houses, which is very interesting. The High Peak Trail is great, but it isn't as flat as some of the other former railway lines, going West from here there is one fairly long climb, and to the East there is a significant downhill section, hence the stationary engine location - it pulled the trains...
