The present castle was built by William de Meschines about 1130-1140, but there was an earlier Norman mound near this site. Further additions were made in the 13th century. In the 16th century there was an attempt to put Mary Queen of Scots on the Throne, and several northern nobles took part. Eight years later the castle was reported to be ruined and decayed. Read moreVisited on 4/9/25 and it looks like the local council have given up on this part of Cumbria. Whilst the remains of the castle were beautiful and interesting. The litter was disgusting. Not just a few cans or bottles lying around but they were everywhere. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I saw a hundred cans, bottles, crisp packets, wrappers just strewn in the grass around the castle. It also had a pungent smell of faeces. I don't recall seeing any bins for visitors rubbish either. Whoever is in charge of waste management needs their employment...
Read moreEgremont Castle is a well preserved motte and bailey ruin with medieval herringbone stone work along the wall to the left of the gatehouse entrance, as you face the entrance. Climb to the top of the motte and you will have a great view of Egremont. The surrounding gardens are not as attractive as in the past, when my Grandad was the grounds keeper, but still have a variety of different trees and lots of daffodils fill part of the grassed over moat.
