Calling it a castle is a bit misleading. It's actually the remains of a motte and bailey castle built shortly after the Norman conquest. That said, it's still worth a visit, partly to soak up the atmosphere, which is powerful, and then to stroll round Elsdon, which is one of Northumberland's many fine villages. If you like a good motte and bailey - and who doesn't - then this is one of the best preserved I've seen. Totally excellent with commanding views from both motte and bailey.
