Bembridge Fort, Isle of Wigh 19th-century two-storey caponiers This Victorian fort stands on the crest of Bembridge Down, with fantastic views in all directions. Begun in 1862 as one of a series of forts along the south coast, built to counter the threat of a French invasion.

The forts were called 'Palmerston Follies' after the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and were a subject of ridicule after the threat diminished, and most never saw military action or fired a single shot.

The fort at Bembridge commands the approach to Brading Haven and was meant to barracks for the batteries along Sandown Bay. Bembridge Fort was completed in 1867, at a total cost of almost Β£50,000. It was built to a hexagonal plan, with a central courtyard, ringed with barrack blocks, and stairs to an upper walkway with gun emplacements. Shafts run from the guns to munition...

Arrived bang on 2pm, to be abruptly told the tour had given away our pre-booked spaces as we were 'late' After pointing out we were not, i got a very sharp 'we ask you to be here 15 minutes before' barked back at me in front of everyone. This info is NOT on the website, or on the booking confirmation info. Some customer service training required.

Anyway, we were allowed to take our place (which we booked 6 weeks in advance!) and fortunately the man at the desk wasn't involved in the rest of the tour.

The tour guides were excellent, very knowledgeable and chatty and willing to answer all questions.

The fort is a great place to have a nose around, with a very interesting history.

All in all an excellent couple of hours spent in the increasingly chilly July summer weather (but no rain!)

Well worth a visit (try not to...

A truly interesting and different experience. A genuine fort from the 1860's era from the time when Palmerston was Prime Minister which has remained largely untouched since then. Some people may think it's pretty run down but I think that is part of its charm and character. Just use your imagination and it's an amazing piece of military architecture also used since then during both World Wars. The visit was without doubt enhanced still further by the very knowledgeable and interesting tour guides that are with you throughout. Be aware though that because of the nature and condition of the building, you are obliged to stay with your allocated guide at all times and there also restrictions on minimum age requirements. A great way to spend a...

A very pointless place to visit. We drove up and the view was spectacular however the actual reason for the visit was pointless, the gates are open, but then a big sign says do not enter, and you can see nothing from the outside, which online it says view from outside, it doesn't say view the side and nothing else. Now if I was around when they do visits it may be awesome. You can do a lot of walks from here and the parking is free so that is a plus. Go for the view not the fort.

A fascinating 90 minute tour of this old fort, first built to defend against Napoleon, later defence in WW1, and a barracks/radar station in WW2. It's in a pretty tumbledown state, but that adds to the atmosphere, IMHO. Don't expect fancy displays, though, it's a take-me-as-you-find-me place. Steve, our guide, was very knowledgeable. Open Tuesdays, pre booking required, National Trust.

This location was a big bucket list item for us! The role that this fort played in the history of not only the UK, but the World is staggering! The fact that it still exists at all is a testament to the importance that is placed on what this fort has done. I would love to see it brought renovated to some extent, but it is amazing nonetheless.
