Piel Castle, located on Piel Island near Barrow-in-Furness, UK, offers a captivating glimpse into England's medieval history. Originally built in the 14th century to defend against Scottish raiders, the castle's ruins are still impressive despite their age and exposure to the elements. The location is stunning, with panoramic views of the surrounding sea and coastline, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Access to Piel Island is part of the adventure, typically involving a short ferry ride, which adds to the secluded and timeless feel of the place. Once on the island, visitors can explore the castle ruins, walk along its walls, and imagine the historical significance of this...

Great spot to visit this 14th century Castle, alot of the structure still remains but from so early on, erosion of its sandstone construction with the elements of the coastal weather took its toll and sadly fell into decline around the late 1500's. While walking around the ruins, you can see just why the location was picked for this fortress, with views out across the bay you can see for miles, which from its 75 foot towers would have been a great vantage point while defending against the Pirates and the Scottish alike back in the day. Nowadays, it's a good backdrop for some photos, looking at wildlife including owls and a cool place to spot seal's from while they laze on the sand bank's - so have your...

Great outdoor excursion for the whole family. Spend the day exploring the castle ruins and the whole island, spending time on the beach, but go in high tide so there actually is a beach since at low tide it's possible to walk to the mainland or Walney island with a guide at low tide. The ferry cost £5 per head and is regularly making trips back and forth. Check them on FB for the latest timings and updates as they will not run if the weather is bad. Search for Piel Ferry. Pay on the way to the island and seems to be cash only so...

It was really great to explore such an old and interesting construction without any 'please do not touch' restrictions. Free entry to the castle + £5 return ferry-boat ride to & from the island which was facilitated by Piel Island ferries. The castle grounds are obviously routinely maintained and the area is safe however I would wonder how inclusive the experience would be for someone with accessibility requirements.
