We had the pleasure of visiting Tees Cottage Pumping Station in Darlington, and it was truly one of the most memorable heritage experiences we've ever had. Although the site was officially closed to the public during our visit (as it wasn’t the open season), a kind and incredibly knowledgeable gentleman generously offered us a private tour—and we are beyond grateful!

Walking through the grounds feels like stepping back in time. The star attractions, of course, are the majestic beam engines and the impressive boiler house dating back to 1902. To stand in front of these massive, meticulously preserved machines is to truly appreciate the power and ingenuity of Victorian engineering. Even though the machinery wasn’t running during our visit, the scale and history of the site were awe-inspiring.

Our guide brought everything to life with fascinating explanations and stories. His passion for the place was infectious, and his willingness to open the doors for us, despite being closed, speaks volumes about the dedication of the volunteers who keep this treasure alive.

If you’re in the Darlington area—or even remotely nearby—do not miss this incredible site. It’s a testament to local history, engineering marvels, and the spirit of community. We can't wait to return during one of the steaming weekends to see the engines in action!

Thank you once again to the gentleman who welcomed us—you made our day...

Saturday 25th November. Victorian Christmas Market & Santa Claus Express. Caught the miniature Xmas train to Santa's 🎅 Grotto, the kids loved it & received a present from the big man in Red. Had Tea & Cake at the coffee shop, good choices, staff lovely. Plenty of xmas stalls, offering all types of gifts. Visited the Pump House lots of information given by the volunteers. Overall an excellent afternoon. Well done to all the volunteers 👏 who worked hard to put this fab day together.

We spent a great couple of hours at the pumping station. The volunteers including young James Evans are very proud of what they have brought back to working order. A must see for everyone Don't miss a ride on the miniature railway brings out the...

To see the size of and watch how the pump works is fascinating, the volunteers all working there were very knowledgeable and keen to share with you how it all works, there is also a working blacksmiths a miniature train and refreshments entry was only £5 per adult and well worth it to see this amazing...
