Tickets to see the castle are £5 per adult. This is a massively inflated price for access to what is a very small area of ruined castle, a gift shop, and a one room exhibition on the battles fought at the castle and surrounding area with some replica weapons and armour and some recent history of the current estate. Save your money and look over the small hedge in front of the gift shop, that gives you a view of all that remains of the castle!

The Castle and Grounds are well kept, and there is ample nearby parking and good toilet facilities nearby. Beware though as the whole Ford and Etal experience is a very big tourist trap linked together by a chargeable light railway (£7 per adult per day) where at every stop you have to pay to see the next attraction. A day out here can very rapidly become very pricey if you go through more than a few stops...

Nice little English Heritage Manned site ( pay to view if you are not a member) plenty of parking , set in the village where other places of interest are available.

Not a great deal to see at this site but plenty of information given by a large exhibit there , which details the history of the building and the village.

The site has toilets and a well stocked shop , but no café , although a short walk to the village will provide this.

Also a short walk further down the hill will take you to the narrow gauge railway that gives you a scenic ride in the village of Heatherslaw where there are further things for you to see.

The Castle itself wont take you long to look around , but if you are taking a trip around the village and then riding the train to Heatherslaw then I would defiantly allow yourself...

Disappointed have been to Etal twice before and this time we were taking our daughter and three grandsons we arrived to be greeted by a sign saying that toilets were out of order. We went in anyway as we thought we could use the pubs toilet as we intended to go for our lunch there. We are members of the NT but Etal Castle is English heritage! So quite expensive for six. We then found out there was no audio guide to the museum which is advertised and we have used it before. We then decided To go for our lunch at the. Black Bull to find was closed, great!! Detour to tearooms as a couple of us getting slightly desperate for a Toilet Tea room closed due to no Water supply gave up and went in search of lunch and a toilet. So a let...

The place is a little off the beaten track so wouldn't travel a long way to see just this, however I combined it with Lindisfarne. The drive to Etal was worth it for the stunning countryside alone and the place has one pub, one tearoom, a village hall and post office come shop. A one horse town. The Castle is accessible from the back of the Car Park to the left and is free to visit. The visitor centre there is closed. The star attraction and oldest surviving structure on this site is the Tower House (like a Keep) built between 1341 and 1368. This was the home of the Manner's family and afforded them a level of protection from the raiding Scots of that time.

Etal castle was built not far from the Scottish border with England on the English side. Hostilities between the two countries had diminished and the castle was not particularly fortified. However, soon after it was built, skirmishes began again and it was strengthened. Just before the battle of Flodden (a close by site) it was captured by the Scottish army of James. Flodden was a crushing defeat for the Scots and the castle was returned to it's original owners. There is an informative exhibition about Flodden in the old Presbyterian chapel on site, you can even enjoy a cup of coffee as you walk round.

Etal Castle is English heritage but is free for the moment as the visitor's centre is being renovated. There is a train ride you can get to the next village or you can walk it. Etal has some lovely cafes and a pub. Great information boards all round the castle but it's a very short visit. We took the river walk to Duddo five stones it is quite a hike from Etal to the stones. The stones were rather unimpressive but you can also get to Twizell Castle from the river walk. Definitely worth a visit if you are up that way and looking for a day out.
