Elan Valley is gorgeous and offers amazing views and options. There is no over-night camping, but hiking, cycling and scenic driving are all great options.

I personally wouldn't walk the 6 mile a side from the visitor centre to the Craig Goch Dam. Cycling was a great alternative. However, the path from the visitor centre to Caban Coch Dam was steep, especially after the hair-pin bend after coming out of the visitor centre.

The leg from Caban Coch to Garreg Ddu Dam was paved and moderately flat. The next leg is unpaved and compacted gravel, and gets muddy after a rainy day, so be prepared to soil your clothes. Also, the second half of this leg is a steady clim to reach the Pen y Garreg Dam.

We turned back here. However the last leg of the trail goes on to Craig Goch Dam. We went back to the visitor centre and deove to this dam. The dam itself is mesmerising and the views are great, but we were so glad that we drove, because it looked like it was a steady climb all the way between the last dams.

Depending on the i dividuals fitness levels, it can be a easy, moderate or even hard trail to cycle or walk on. As an alternative, driving through also offers all the same spectacular views. In either form, it is definitely worth visiting.

As an added bonus, the whole valley is a dark sky park, and offers spectacular starry skies under the perfect weather. However, we were terrified of the vast expansive darkness and isolation to be able to enjoy the views for more than...

The majestic dams of the Elan Valley offer a stunning year-round canvas for cyclists, walkers, and photographers.

There are five dams on the River Elan; Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, Pen y Garreg, Craig Goch and Nant y Gro.

There are two dams on the River Claerwen: Dol y Mynach and Claerwen.

With the exception of Dol y Mynach, all the dams are also...

This place is absolutely amazing. The parking was really good as it's only £3 for the day and all the parking for the valley was included. You can walk between the dams but we drove as the weather was getting bad. Be careful the further you go because the roads get quite narrow and there's quite a sheer drop. Loads of beautiful spots to sit in and...

Some lovely scenery and long windy roads through the valley. Beautiful and remote once you get on some trails. We walked the Ancient road that runs East to West from Strata Florida to Rhayder. The walk was stunning taking in some views of the Wye Valley and beyond. If your a hardy walker or pilgrim this route is well worth the trouble.

Excellent place for walking, riding, cycling. There are 9 walking trails with moderate, strenuous and easy levels. Historic dams and reservoirs. Beautiful scenery, woodlands, fields with well marked trails. Cafe, toilet, gifts shop facilities in the visitor centre. Parking charges applies( in visitor centre parking) around £3.
