The castle is a ruin and should be surrounded by fences but one has been broken down so you can get in and if you want have a look around but be careful. If you do decide to visit I would go in the morning. When we were there on Saturday 25/03/23 in the afternoon and the local youths were using it as a drinking den. Beside the castle is a small playpark with swings, climbing frame, seesaw etc. Its probably for 7 and under. There is some picnic tables just outside the playpark The views out to isle of Arran and addrossan are worth the walk to the top of the slope. Read moreThere are significant remains of what was once a quite significant castle that dates back to the 1400's although it's reckoned that there had been a castle on the site as early as 1140. William Wallace largely destroyed it after he captured it in battle, then the rebuilt castle was burned down after an attack in 1528 and then Oliver Cromwells troops finally demolished it and reused the stone elsewhere. Read moreSuch a shame to see a historical ruin left to be used for people drinking. They have discarded all the rubbish, cans and smashed bottles all over the place. It's a shambles. There is a fence surrounding the castle but there is a way in. Think this area needs a big clean up and a better secure fence. It is a shame not to allow people to see it though.
