Glen Garioch Distillery — Attraction in Great Britain

Did the Wee Tasting Tour here with Richard as our guide and it ended up being one of our very best distillery visits on the Scottish mainland. Can't stress the importance of a good guide and Richard fulfilled every expectation - he's just a great ambassador for Glen Garioch and their superb whiskies. He knows how to explain a distillery's workings in clear and concise English. The non-English speaking guests in our tour group were all very impressed and felt well informed. The smelling of the open casks at the end of the tour was fantastic. The 30+ year old sherry cask had my eyes rolling, but the much younger ex-Bourbon barrel was also an excellent example. I think it's in this way that whisky-curious consumers can gain a real insight into the importance of wood maturation with this "hands-on" approach to whisky education. The subsequent tasting back in the visitor centre was chatty and extremely relaxed - just as it should be. No one was preaching about what you're supposed to smell and taste from each of the drams; it was taken for granted that every taster will enjoy his or her own tasting experience if simply encouraged to enjoy it for what it offers. Fantastic distillery nestled in the village of Old Meldrum. Has that authentic feel despite utilising modern equipment in pursuit of reduction in energy use and climate impact.

Access is straight forward and the small car park sits next to the visitor centre and shop. Really liked the shop items on sale from branded to the essentials of glasses and whiskey.

The tour guide was excellent and covered all the facts and figures you'd expect. Also pointed out all the unique elements of the buildings and ensured we got a look at an active maltings floor. Our guide Emma, could have breezed past that but didn't and that was 5 stars right there.

Still house and processing equipment are ultra modern internally. But again the explanation of why, makes you appreciate the efforts taken to reduce environmental impact.

Whiskey tasting of 3 Glen Garioch was good, the drivers drams to take away is so innovative. Was lucky enough to bottle my own 16 year old single cask, again very slick service from Emma and reasonable cost. An excellent experience, highly recommend a visit and...

So happy that we chose Glen Garioch for our whiskey distillery tour. We happened to be going through the area and decided to stop for a tour and it was a great decision. Old Meldrum is a cute little town and the distillery was absolutely fabulous. Just a beautiful and historic facility where they still malt their own barley, which apparently is rare these days. We met Gill when we arrived and were able to get on a tour after a cancellation. Gill was charming and funny and very knowledgeable. She shared every detail of the whiskey making process and answered all questions with clear and concise answers displaying her knowledge. Highly recommend this place and the tour.
