I went on the £20 tour and was pretty let down by the experience in terms of value for money, especially when compared to the many other distillery tours I've been on. I would recommend to anyone to avoid booking at this price point.
On reflection I notice that the tour is labelled as a "storytelling tour" which I believe is purposefully done to confuse the consumer and isn't clear as to what it entails. You will NOT get to see any production areas like the warehouse, mash tuns, stills. Instead you get taken into a fancy showroom with a very small bonded warehouse that's just for show. You didn't even see a photo of the mash tun or stills. Now I know the stock response is going to be "we are a working distillery/we are too small to run tours through" yet I've been around 20+ distilleries and they can all manage it, even the small sites. They also offer this level of tour experience if you fork out £100. I notice on the £60 tour they clearly explain that it doesn't include a distillery tour so this has clearly been an issue in the past.
Two tasting drams and a cocktail also feels a bit below market value when others are offering 3 larger measures for the same price. The cocktail is clearly there to reduce the serving size and I'll be honest I struggled to taste the whisky in the cocktail, it was also the same whisky that had already been tasted. The shop discount for people that have been on the tour and "driver's drams" are now standard practice everywhere so is unfair to list this as a perk. Driver's also loose out on a measure of whisky as they are given the same cocktail without the whisky and none extra to take home.
The tour was as informative as any other distillery tour and the guides/shop staff were lovely. I did end up tasting more whisky in the shop before buying a couple of bottles, which again is fairly standard in the industry. The whisky itself is very nice but I just feel compared to everywhere else I've been around this felt like more...
Read moreThis was the experience my husband was most anticipating in Scotland, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. We showed up early, and they let us roam the grounds until our appointment time. There’s a cute little waterfall on property. We booked the Malt Master Experience which I believe was around £120 each. Lorna was our guide and came to collect us and four other people when it was time. She showed us around the distillery and explained the process. It was awesome. She was very knowledgeable. The stills are very interesting, and I enjoyed learning about the different cask types and what went into flavoring the whiskey. When we finished the tour, she took us into a small room with hundreds of tiny bottles from casks for owner tastings. They had a table set up with 5 glass bottles of whiskey for each of us to sample, sniff, and blend into a unique 200ML bottle of whiskey which she signed off on after. My nose is not particularly impressive, but I was able to discern certain scents from them. Blending and tasting was fun. If I had to do it again, I would be staying somewhere nearby so I could taste with impunity and not have to worry about driving after. They do package your complimentary 12 year dram if you are a DD. After, she walked us back to the gift shop and let us try some of the other whiskey options. We ended up buying soooo many things, lol, but they had such cool stuff!! Was well worth the money for the experience. I would definitely...
