Pentland Hills is a mixed bag. The trails in the northern-most bit, likely the most frequented, are far too steep to be of any reasonable value. It's as if they've forgotten the primary purpose of trails is to ease passage. Given that it's far easier to walk up the other side of these northern hills, simply disregarding the trails, it's unclear why they exist in the first place. Further south, the trails become much more reasonable.
The scenery is nice, but entirely unremarkable given the country in which it is situated. Scotland is uncontroversially one of the most beautiful countries on earth, but you wouldn't know it from visiting Pentland hills.
Also worth mentioning is that the people you're likely to share the trails with suuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Just, are the worst sort of people. Articulating the precise manner in which they suck is challenging, but it's unclear that that's necessary. Reading the glowing reviews of this objectively bottom-quartile regional park confirms that those attracted to Pentland Hills don't seem to understand they're in Scotland, and moreover suck.
In short, the only thing this has on Holyrood Park is that...
Read moreMy first walk in a couple of years and the first for our eldest, who is 6. We parked up at the car park along from the pub. Plenty of space and great to see there is now a cafe, I don't think there used to be! Toilet Facilities available which is great to have as a last stop. The weather was decent and the walk in was good. The paths are well kept, considering the dry weather. All dogs were kept on leads as we walked around which made a huge difference as our daughter is not too keen on dogs. We headed for the Turnhouse Hill, which I had decided would be a good aim. A number of nice snack stops available, with some rather special views over the surrounding regions including Fife, East Lothian, Scottish Borders and Edinburgh. A reasonably easy walk for us, make syre you have the correct footwear and I'd always recommend using walkkg sticks which helps for both going up and down. Great walk for a first Scottish Hill for our daughter and everyone we met were so friendly and talkative, as you'd expect 👍🏞 Total round trip for us was 3.5 hours with around...
Read moreAmazing views and good paths to& from and across these hills. Many possibilities for walks. Going up from the side along skislope is very (seriously) steep. Take this in account in wet, snowy or if your legs&knees can handle this. However, views from Allermuir hill are some of the best. Highest top ScaldLaw has good path from several starting points and there are no strap cliffs big wide summit plateau. West Kip looks steep and is steep but worth the effort. Almost at the very end of the Monks Rigg is Font stone. Fantastic views for considerably less effort, however, weather can change suddenly and care should always be taken.. can be problem parking at the weekends. But there are alternative parking or less popular starting points. Wc, maps and information at Flatterstone visitour centre. Unfortunately the closeness of a city can be an issue- people take their dogs for a walk during lambing season, leave dog-poo bags and takeaway coffee mugs, leave their banana skins for centuries to...
