My old stomping ground as a child, it's now become a thriving nature reserve 30yrs later.
What was once an apparent sandy landscape, barren, but for a selection of climbable silverbirch trees & a wealth of young saplings, it's now evolved into an odyssey of mature evergreens lined in regimental formation that merges into the old wood path creating a seamless forrestory experience.
I recommend this leisurely walking experience, be it dog walking, walking with young children (as there's a small play that certainly wasn't there in my day), or just a Christmas dinner walk off, to anyone locally, or passing.
Just leave your chainsaw at home. Leave that to the professionals, as opposed to the person who chopped down a half dozen oak trees on the top side of the quarry - pant lane end. It's upset a lot of people & is quite unnecessary.
Those trees didn't pre-emp me, I pre-empted them. And now they've been chopped, which is quite sad.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreA nature reserve is a place reserved for nature. As a wildlife trust reserve and a SSSI this is an important site for many ground nesting birds and rare flora and fauna. While people may not see an obvious reason (such as livestock) for their dog to be on a lead, the continual pressure on wildlife such as ground nesting birds, from dogs running free through the undergrowth, will have a huge impact on biodiversity, especially with the high levels of dog ownership now. Please take your dog to a dog park for them to run free and respect the dogs on leads signs at nature reserve sites. Even if you donāt particularly care about breeding birds or rare plants, if the nature these sites are meant to protect disappear, they will no longer exist for you to enjoy a walk, instead the protections will go and another housing development...

For a feeling of woods and open space we are quite spoiled in our locality as there are lot's of similar places nearby, but with no housing estate's nearby, so dog mess is less of an issue in other places around . PS I love dog's, just don't like...
