Often a place I come for a stroll, doesn't matter which season of the year either, all have their merits. The Humber Bridge dominates the skyline, and rightly so, even after being opened in the 1980's it's still an awesome spectacle. The Foreshore itself stretches for quite some way both to the East and West of Hessle, but many people just park their cars and don't get very far. More seriously energetic people, walkers/joggers and cyclists, tend to venture further afield as the path goes up to the next place along the river. To the West North Ferriby (or just Ferriby to most locals) the reason for the North bit is because there is a South Ferriby on the opposite side of the River Humber in Lincolnshire. To the East is the City of Kingston Upon Hull, or locally just Hull, often pronounced minus the 'H'. There is a pub Country Park, just beyond the bridge, and in a summer a couple of ice cream vans are parked up. There is also a nature park, formerly known as 'Little Switz' officially known as, would you believe, Country Park, which at the moment, March 2020, is being refurbished, or rather the old mill close by is, with a new children's play area. In a winter the breeze off the river will certainly blow away any cobwebs but on a nice summers day the breeze is most welcome. Can get busy on a summer's night or weekend, winter has it's regulars as well,...
Β Β Β Read moreIf you are going into Hull or just over the bridge and on towards Beverley, then I recommend a stop down by the water. The foreshore is a few minutes away from the Humber Bridge and is located in Hessle. The views are fantastic at the water front and there is usually a couple of ice cream vans parked up. But be warned the first one sells a small tub for Β£5.00 and works out expensive for a family of four. You can buy the same ice cream in various shops in Hessle and save a good few pounds. The bar on the foreshore is fine and a good spot for a pint or a glass of wine. The shopping in Hessle is very good with mostly independent shops and cafes. The two butchers shops are really good and we always bring back a bag of shopping from...
Β Β Β Read moreWhat makes Hessle foreshore a place I keep returning to is the changeability of the view. The combination of a tidal boundary place with classic British weather makes no two visits the same. It is peaceful to sit here and watch the way the wind moves the surface of the water in one direction while the tide pulls it in another. Sure, there are more beautiful places in the world... but it is a blessing to find something dynamic and dramatic right on your doorstep. Oh, and there's the Humber bridge to admire too. If you walk up there you'll find some of Larkin's poetry cast into the metalwork. This place has parking, cycle routes, toilets, refreshments and often there's an ice-cream van nearby. 5 stars for simply existing as a...
