Wonderful find on the roadside outside of Llangollen. The sign at the nearby abbey mentioned the pillar, so I went up to see it. 1000-year-old monument on a 4000-year-old hill. Both the hill and the monument are fenced off, so you can't climb up and get a closer look. Definitely worth the stop.

Wonderful find on the roadside outside of Llangollen. The sign at the nearby abbey mentioned the pillar, so I went up to see it. 1000-year-old monument on a 4000-year-old hill. Both the hill and the monument are fenced off, so you can't climb up and get a closer look. Definitely worth the stop.

It is truly amazing that after 1,200 years, it is still standing. Shame the cross has worn away, and broken off if this could speak, it would tell tales of King's princes, princesses, magicians, dragons, and even war. Eliseg's Pillar is a fragment of a 9th century cross six metres tall.
