Council have left quite a lot of the park area to be reclaimed by nature, including quite a lot of the footpath edging & as such it looks unkempt. Never seen so many fallen trees !! Not the park I grew up in 50+ years ago. Where have the masses of flowers & Rhododendron bushes gone ?? However, it is still nice to walk through with my wife & to reminisce about literally 1,000s of happy childhood days we had spent there, aged 3 to 16, Riding our bikes, playing football next to the tennis courts & bandstand, the swing park, the Valley shop & animals, the annual Fare on the top fields, picnics & the boating lake & not forgetting sledging on Angel Hill of course. It is a particular shame to remember how that area once was, whose idea was it to plant masses of trees & thus deny literally tens of thousands of children countless hours of fun in the snow on that hill !!?? VERY SAD to know for a fact that IFFFFFFF B H C had been located in South Manchester, it would 100% certainly have been maintained/returned to its former glory of the early 60s. Perhaps if Andy Burnham had any conscience he would intervene !? (BUT looking at the state of Moston Lane these days, I Doubt he would care or even know the area). Franny (65) & Jean (64) both born &...
Read moreA lovely walk through a fascinating ancient woodland with lots of little paths and areas to discover... Angel hill is home to Blackleys beautiful war memorial. If your ready to explore then go search for the 99 steps and see if the legend is true. (you can Google it all, its too much to type) then see if you can find the giants tooth. At the top side of the park there's a lovely duck pond, a fishing pond and a cafe that does the best coffee ever! As you would expect in an ancient woodland there is an abundance of nature, there are woodpeckers, ring neck parakeets and thousands of squirrels and various rare birds. The Herons are residents on the island at the centre of the duck pond along with a family of terrapins that reside usually on the far side of the pond where all the branches have fallen. Blackley was first mentioned in the doomsday book as an ancient hamlet, there is a lot of history and a lot of stories of strange goings on in these woods over the years ... be mindful that these woodlands are very haunted so be careful of the boggart and the white lady... If you happen to find yourself at the ruins of the old mans hut whilst exploring - my advice is you don't stay...
Read moreI've been coming here for over 30 years. I occasionally fish the small lakes here. One of them is managed for that reason. There were times in my life that the cafe was more than just a cafe. It's lovely to walk around. There's great wildlife to be seen: herons nest by one if the lakes. I've seen a kingfisher whilst sat patiently sat fishing once. The main path is string and in good condition. Around a year ago new benches were installed. A running track is available, presumably for clubs. I used to watch foxes here. As for dogs, it is one of the best dog walking places in the area. There's also large open field to gives dogs a run, provide any poo is picked up and no other dogs are present, because you never know if another's dog is anxious, however lovely your dog is. BHC is a real escape from suburbia. Manchester is...
