Stayed at a local touring park (Southfield caravan touring park), just a 10 minute walk. The road leading down to the beach has post office tea room (didn't use). It's a lovely church over the road that looks interesting for the next visit. There is a small (free) car park to the right of access to the beach. Also, portaloos. Please make sure the access is kept clear as the lads clearing ordnance further down by Cowden access the beach this way. The access is a steady decent on a concrete curved track. At the bottom, you can head off to the left or right. To the left (towards Hornesea is a steady walk, a little stoney. Seems to be favoured by anglers. Going to the right, it's a little rocky but opens onto a nice beach. There are still pebbles, etc, but I preferred this way. If you do find anything that remotely appears to be ordnance/ munitions, DO NOT TOUCH. Call the coastguard or police. This is a good beach for dog walkers (clear up the mess). There are 4 wheely bins between the 2 beaches at the bottom of the access road plus a waste bin halfway up the track. Also, a bench for anyone who needs a rest. Overall, it's a great beach. Its only downside is limited parking, so if you are at a local campsite, I would seriously suggest walking, but note that the footpath is narrow & the speed limit on the road is 40 or 50mph so it...
Read moreFound out about this beach due to Yorkshire live as a hidden gem , so thought as we were in the area we would give it a try. Although parking is free, the car park is pretty small so I would have other plans ready just in case you can’t get parked, as everywhere else seems to have double yellow lines. Beach is dog friendly all year round and is a nice sandy beach. There is a slope to walk down/up to get on the beach so bare this in mind if you have trouble with slopes. Can’t fault the beach and when we went it was really quiet, I can see why it is a hidden gem. Walked for about 2 hours in total after turning right at the bottom of the slope and barely saw another person. Near the car park is a small cafe which sadly has just closed when we got there after our walk (about 4pm) so can’t comment on this. Warning there is a sign about unexploded ordinance as the beach was used by the ministry of defence previously but not surprisingly, didn’t see anything, so don’t let this put you off. Nice beach to spend the day at or walk the dog without the hussle and bussle of other nearby beaches. The tide comes right in so make sure you check tide times...
Read moreI love Mappleton Beach, but what a chore to get parked, there is a rumour they are going to provide more parking spaces, fingers duly crossed! The r/h side beach is good for fossiling and many people walk their dogs along this side. You have to be very aware of the hidden dangers along this stretch of coast though. There may be old bits of ordinance along the beach, it could be live so leave well alone, there are guidlines advising at the entrance to the beach. The cliffs are old glacial spill and are prone to collapse and finally dog toffee, bagged or unbagged, sorry but quite a few people do not clear up after their dogs, sadly a growing trend. The l/h side of the beach can get very busy, its a great sun trap, loads swimming in the sea today!! At the top of the lane to the beach is a little cafe, home baked cakes and last time we called in they were serving hot food, they sell fresh eggs, ice creams, home made jams etc. Apart from the little niggles, its a lovely place and worth a visit if you dont like arcades...
