Visited on a wet day in February and the hill is very slippery on some paths. The path from the priory was dodgy and don't try and go up the first path you come to as it was a steep muddy slippery gully when I tried it. Best to walk around the base fence to the gate at the western edge and go up the well made hard path. When you get to the halfway ring, go left not right so you avoid the top of the gully. This takes you round to the final slope path up to the top and the tower. You can go up the tower but the views were great, even on a drizzly day. Would be a spectacular panoramic view of Somerset on a sunny day. We'll worth the walk up from Montacute village but be careful and wear good walking...
Read moreVisited this tower as part of a circular walk from montacute house which is also national trust. The tower is at the top of st Michael's hill. It's a pretty steep climb to get up to it. You can climb the tower and look out from the top but it's not maintained or looked after and as it's free and accessible at all times it's a bit gross inside. Smelled of wee at the top and quite a few used condom packets. There's also no information board by the tower. There is more info at montacute house. Part of the circular walk was closed due to a falling tree but the rest was very scenic and beautiful. Good view of...
Read moreSt. Michael's Hill has a rich history, evolving from a pre-Saxon sacred site to a Norman castle and later a priory. The hill was initially a site of veneration for a Saxon cross. The Normans built a castle there, which was later gifted to the newly founded Montacute Priory around 1102. Not very well signposted, if you park by the play park, there's a path that takes you there, the tower was shut at the time of our visit and there isn't a lot of information from the National Trust when it's open, but there are definitely NO views from around the...
