A beautiful, well maintained visitor attraction.

Aside from the Silent Valley and Ben Crom dams, there a number of relatively short, but well maintained and well signed forest trails, some of which can be steep.

It is also possible to walk up the access road to Ben Crom reservoir, a distance of about 5 miles return along a well-paved and relatively level access road (apart from the last kilometre or so up to Ben Crom dam when it gets steep, but not excessively so). There are a series of stairs up to the crest of Ben Crom dam, probably the equivalent of climbing 8 to 10 stories.

If you have limited mobility or use a mobility scooter, the access road up to Ben Crom dam is probably the closest you will ever get to walking and enjoying being in the high Mournes, so it is worth checking out if you are able to do so.

Other plus points:

1 - There is no traffic noise along the access road to Ben Crom dam.

2 - There are native red squirrels in the forest – we saw one today. It was raiding the bird feeders in the car park. We got to within 3 m of it in the car (note - as soon as you open the door of the car to get out, the squirrel will clear off).

3 - There are well maintained and clean toilets.

4 - There is a café and interpretative centre, both of which we didn’t visit, so I cannot...

Visiting Silent Valley Mountain Park was an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the Mourne Mountains, it offers breathtaking views, peaceful walking trails, and a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The reservoir surrounded by majestic peaks is absolutely stunning, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike.

The park is well-maintained with clearly marked paths suitable for all ages and abilities, and the fresh mountain air is revitalizing. We enjoyed a leisurely walk around the reservoir and even stopped for a family picnic while soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings.

The visitor center was informative, giving insight into the fascinating history behind the reservoir’s construction, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There are also plenty of benches along the way to rest and admire the scenery.

Silent Valley is a must-visit for anyone looking to connect with nature and enjoy Northern Ireland’s stunning landscapes. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or just relaxing, it’s a peaceful retreat that leaves you feeling refreshed. Highly...

Silent Valley lives up to its name. Nestled within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this park offers a tranquil escape into gorgeous scenery. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, there's a path for you. Paved trails wind around the serene Silent Valley Reservoir, perfect for families with young children or those seeking a leisurely stroll. More adventurous types can tackle the steeper climbs to Ben Crom Reservoir, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views.

The park is a haven for wildlife, with birdwatchers flocking to spot everything from buzzards to curlews. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it by the glistening waters or explore the visitor center to learn about the valley's unique ecosystem and its role as a source of drinking water for Northern Ireland. Don't forget to indulge in a post-walk treat at the charming tea room – their sausage rolls are legendary!

Variety of walks of varying ease in a beautiful part of Ireland, enjoyed by kids, parents and grandparents alike. We walked the (captioned) orange trail, switched to the yellow trail and then to the blue trail anti-clockwise. There are plenty of benches on the orange and yellow trails. The blue trail is a bit steep at one point but there is a stone to rest at on the way up and it is worth keeping going for the views of the sea and mountains. The kids and I enjoyed rolling down the hill at the dam, climbing over the stile at the Mourne wall (while some of us sat down) and there is a playground near the interpretive centre. Bring seeds to feed the ducks at the lake if you have kids.
