We had an enjoyable day in Ribchester. The museum is located on the site of a Roman Fort, and next to the beautiful St Wilfred's Church. A relatively small museum, it has interesting, detailed displays regarding the local site and its significance in Roman Britain. The displays were simple, clear and interesting. Upstairs, we were introduced to a collection of animal bones which had been unearthed during local excavations. Our children found the lecture interesting and the opportunity to categorise bones educational. The visit was more informative than fun, however, the entrance fee was nominal and the museum is an excellent introduction to our Roman history for children with a shorter attention span. There are toilet facilities here and, I'm assuming the museum is privately owned, there is a polite request to turn off lights in the facilities in order to save unnecessary electric costs. Between the museum and church are the remains of the forts grain stores. A short walk along a pathway by the river is the site of a Roman bath house. The church was open, beautifully maintained, with an equally interesting and extensive history. There is limited parking outside the museum allowing easy access to the church and museum. A pay per hour carpark is situated a short walk away, opposite a children's playground and recreation area. We spent the day in Ribchester, at the museum, church and play area, and later enjoyed drinks in the walked garden of a pub which was a five minute walk from the museum. Highly recommend a visit to this area. I can only imagine what lies under the more modern buildings in and private land...
Read moreVery informative, lots of artifacts found in the area on display plus lots of information about how it was all discovered as well as how the Romans lived in Ribchester Fort etc. There was a little wait to enter the main exhibition due to a school outing but the volunteer staff member said that it was ok to come back if we wanted to. A small fee as it's a registered charity and cash is preferable payment method for the museum. Parking is in the village which is a short walk away but there is limited space for disabled parking, I think, outside the museum. Nearby are the remains of the Roman Baths and the remains of the Roman granary are at the back of the church graveyard. Also a small map outside the public toilets, (village car park), with details of a walk around the village to spot different historical buildings and landmarks and small pieces of information relating to the history...
Read moreTraveled out today from Blackpool, nit a bad drive. Got there for 10am Tuesday 25th October 2022. It was closed, we walked a little down the river came back and still closed. We then went for a walk around the church grounds, came back and it was still closed. There were no signs of it being closed or a reason to be closed. We waited till about half past 10, we then called it a wasted trip. My 8 year old was upset as the visit was to do research for his homework. So instead of showing him an adventure we have had to do his homework from Google.
Complete waste of time. If your closed and not opening then update your Internet information please, instead of upsetting kids and wasted peoples time and money in this cost risen world already. 2 stars and that was for the view...
