Unfortunately there's not a lot to see here. The ruins are completely fenced off, and locked to the public. You can see some aspects of the site from behind the fence, but you don't really get a good look at anything interesting. Historic Environment Scotland do seem to be carrying out some repair works, evident from the scaffolding surrounding most of the structures, however this only seems to be to prevent further damage rather than restoration. Hopefully this site will be restored and opened to the public again some day, as there aren't many 16th century castles remaining...
Read moreBit of a disappointment as a Historic Scotland member. I'm glad it was set within the estate grounds as it gave us other things to view. It's basically unloved and forgotten about. Not much to see but scaffolding that has obviously been up too long and is now wonky and ineffective. Don't go just for the castle, plan to spend time in Chatelherault estate park. Oh and don't follow the post code from the historic Scotland booklet... just drive to the estate park. It won't take you the correct way to...
Read moreI was disappointed, I didn't know what to expect, from the google satellite images it seemed like it was at least maintained. But as you can see from my photos it is overgrown, fenced off, abandoned scaffolding and sadly really nothing to see at the moment.
Hopefully Historic Scotland will do more with this site in the future, but it looks long abandoned by them.
Dukes bridge is worth a look as it is...
