I loved my visit here and, given that my other half (& dog!) competes in the annual Granite City dog agility show, this will undoubtedly be the first of many visits. The +s are that it's not too expensive to ride on the train, and if you don't travel it's free to wander around, look at the vast amount of rolling stock and have a refreshment in the great wee cafe. On the negative side, I'm not a rail nut, but I did feel I wanted to know so much more about the history of the station, the line, the rolling stock, the wagons, their usage, history etc etc. There was pretty much zero info on any of this. The shop was useless in this regard also since it seemed to sell nothing but Thomas The Tank - as I said to the lady serving, well outside my age range. I'm sure those who run this heritage line will know all the info I'm after (and way more besides ), so please, please...
Read moreMy husband and I visited Brechin station while on holiday in august last year 2016, the station was closed and we were very disappointed as we had traveled quite a few miles, but all was not lost, we were allowed into the premises by a volunteer worker on our trust not to venture into the track, we were enthralled, we watched as one volunteer placed penny's on the track? Why? Thomas was coming to town, and was going to squash the penny's, fantastic means to raise funds for the railway, we were also able to buy from the shop a fridge magnet and a locally made station name plate, which has pride of place above the lounge door, we we will be back later this year to visit again, and hopefully have a steam train journey down the track, thank you all for the very valuable work you do, and...
Read moreWe went on a Sunday with a steam train which was a great experience. On the way there we sat in an open carriage and on the way back we had a first class "Harry Potter" style compartment to ourselves. The volunteers running it all did a good job. Train journey is only around 20 minutes but it very enjoyable.
We also used the Basin Rambler Bus service which regularly takes passengers for free on a classic bus to and from Montrose via the house of Dun. We got off and spent a few hours at the house of Dun before getting the bus back to the train station at the bridge of dun and then the steam train back to Brechin.
The steam train and bus service only run on a few Sundays a year so it's recommended to book ahead online . This was easily done via...
