Went to the fairy trail with my boyfriend as something free to do and was quite excited to see some fairies (even though I’m 23).

Parking is free which is always a bonus and the grounds near the carpark were well maintained. However, there was only one sign post that said ‘fairy trail’ and then left you to your own devices. We definitely went the wrong way and cane across literally nothing fairy-like.

We turned back and finally found something that made us think we’d gone the right way, but soon realised the tree pictured in the reviews wasn’t actually just a cute decorated tree for the ‘fairies’ but it is a tree to honour people who have passed away. It didn’t really fit our holiday vibe, so we left.

Definitely in need of some signs to actually show you where...

A lovely place for a walk through the forest or let the kids go mental at the play park, we also had a more serious side to our visit, my wife's mum sadly died a week ago and there is a remembrance tree in the forest where people hang or place photos, cards, anything really that remembers you of your passed friend, animal, or relation its quite lovely and it gets the kids involved too in saying goodbye to someone dear to them. Sadly there was another wee death in our family my granddaughter's mouse Rosy 3 years old but part of our family nevertheless, we put our pictures on the tree with a few chosen words from the kids and they seemed to like the sentiment, then off to the beach for ice cream n chips n all the beachy stuff we could eat and drink...

I was at the fairy trail today with the kids for the first time in a few years and we were so shocked and disappointed to discover that it has been left to ruin. There is very little of the original trail left now. There's some new wooden sculptures, but it's nothing like the enchanting, magical fairy trail that it once was. It's really overgrown, broken glass in places and a lot of dog mess around. After all the hard work put into the upkeep of the fairy trail by dedicated volunteers over the years, seeing their hard work now gone, is really sad, for...

For a free day out we could not grumble at all. Overall I think we was here for a good 3 hours. The parking was free too which is always a bonus. We took a picnic which there was plenty of benches. I was expecting more fairy doors but we did find a few. The children loved the freedom to run around the wood as well which is a short circle and there is so many different trails and things to see. I definitely would recommend to any fairy lovers. Such a cute idea. (My children loved the oak tree too with the lovely note and a free tree hug!!)

It's a beautiful area to walk around and it feels like there's wee surprise things to look at everywhere with tree carvings, the fairy doors, the fairy garden, different wildlife. As a 30-something year old I was in awe of everything I saw so I can only imagine what wonderment it would bring to a child. We visited and it was still wintertime so it wasnt even in full bloom! I'm definitely going back in different seasons so I can fully experience it.

Sad to see now after the initial high number visiting a few years ago at its inception by some young mums. The fairy trail has just been abandoned since the council took it over, although there's some chainsaw wood carvings & an overgrown raised border financed by the R&A after the last Open at Royal Troon. Play park still great, altho mobbed when I visited with our youngest granddaughter!
