Very little remains behind a metal fence to prevent access, probably to stop locals from the ugly housing estate built on most of the original castles land. There is an information board which is helpful. It was built sometime after 1488 after the original castle was destroyed during an ongoing feud with a local family. It looks unlikely that any effort will be made to preserve what remains, so sadly it will just continue to deteriorate.

Ancestral home of General Alexander Hamilton, second in command to George Washington himself. His grandfather lived here before his father set off for foreign lands. Is it not a shame how poor heritage tourism is served in North Ayrshire when we see this. No signage, no car park, no historical notes - poor, shame on those authorities responsible.

The ruin still has 3 walls standing, the big curtain wall has arched gothic windows, the style copied from Kilwinning Abbey probably. This was home to the Cunningham family, but was sacked and burned by the enemy Montgomery clan There's a nearby footbridge over the Garnock. It's a popular area for locals walking dogs etc

The old castle ruins in the scheme where i grew up . Never used to have the security fence round it but from what i remember theres alot of the castle has fallen down . Prob unsafe now hence the fence to keep kids out . I remember the massive fir or pine tree that stood inside it . Giving an idea of how long it has lay derelict . The tree has been felled leaving a big stump . Being older now and spent my life as a builder i can see now that this prob wasnt a castle as such . But was maybe three or fout buildings built onto each other . Different floor heights are evident and some of the walls built using more modern techniques. Still the big gothic windows survive and still look quite sturdy . Has a fair bit of ground in the area too that would have been part of the kerelaw estate . In some of the bush you can find remains of buildings or bridges . Must have been some place in its day but as history tells , local feuding ended in the place being burned to the...

Disappointing to say the least. It’s a gorgeous piece of history, but the way in which the surrounding area was developed really takes away from the castle. Difficult to access, located right beside a residential neighborhood, and vandalized through graffiti with some trash strewn around, it’s a shame that it isn’t nicer. If homes had been built further away then it’s possible that it could have been left open to public access, but sadly, this isn’t the case. The only reason why I still rate it at 3 stars is due to the absolutely stunning river and neat little bridge located behind the castle. It’s a really great place to hang out and to walk along, so I recommend a visit if only for a brief spell of taking photos followed by hanging...
