The surrounding countryside and walks in the area are great but I found Mavisbank house itself to be a little too ruined to be worth visiting. Where some ruins (like penicuik house) retain the grandeur of the original building this has been lost at Mavisbank. To try and 'preserve' the crumbling ruins it has been surrounded by metal fencing, propped up with endless sections of brick, is very very overgrown and has been supported in a variety of unflattering ways.
