This was a really nice surprise visit. I used to live about an hour from Newark Castle for a fair part of my life. Driven past it hundreds of times and even walked past it on numerous occasions. Never thought of going in. It sort of hidden a little by the Ferguson shipyard. Do not let that put you off. Turn in via the large roundabout and go left past the yard entrance. Then whilst visiting my brother he pipes up to the kids fancy a run around a castle. Off we go. What a surprise going into this castle with lots of rooms and little places with magnificent views. Each room takes or brings you to another little place of magic. The main dining hall though small is fantastic, like a mini Stirling Castle grand banqueting hall and the old recessed beds are a fascinating look into what must have been a grand place a couple of hundred years ago. Well, now 250 years to be more precise, when the family sold their grounds to the burgesses of Glasgow to set up the port of Glasgow. Now known as simply Port Glasgow. Plenty of car parking. Great place for the kids to enjoy and as a family loads of outdoor space right next to the Clyde to set up a picnic. Or for the kids to have a run-around and play. In the area or just driving past, it's now a must-go to place. I know the kids were shouting this morning "Sun's out can we go back to Newark? !!!!!!!!"

Very nice castle. Former hous of 0atrick Maxwell, notorious for his arrogance and violence. He buld the new part of the castle in 1597 and it is well preserved from the time. You can park for free outside ang get tickets onsite or online. Very friendly staff at the ticket office that gave us good knowledge of the history of the castle and what is worth seeing. We also got insight of other places worth visiting. Small gift shop has items that you can get but no food. The castle is wery specious and you can easoly get lost in between hidden passages and staircases that lead to different levels and different rooms . Dining room is well preserved and autentic . While groind floor cellar and kitchen areas benefit from large fire places and bred ovans so have a look at tge ceiling. This is one of the unique places that spiral staircases are anticlock wise so enjoy and mind the gap . The staircases are very narrow and there is a lot up to 64 in one tower. The room doors are low so if you are very tall mind your head . There are some benches outside on the grounds where you can stop to enkoy tge views and have a picknik

Absolutely stunning and under rated castle. Must have driven past it a thousand times but never been in. Free parking was the first plus point but the castle itself is beautiful, so much to explore and amazing views from the upper floors. Well placed and informative information points throughout give very interesting (and sometimes dark) insights into the castles history and really make you think about the events that once happened within the same room you are standing. The manager Billy was fantastic and clearly very passionate about the place and was happy to give a detailed history and have a good chat. Overall a great way to spend an afternoon and made me want to visit other similar sites across the country

Newark Castle, situated in Port Glasgow on the banks of the River Clyde, is a historic site with a rich maritime and industrial past. Originally built in the 15th century, it was later expanded into a grand residence by the Maxwell family in the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Scottish gentry and the strategic importance of the Clyde.

The architecture of Newark Castle blends medieval defensive features with later Renaissance additions, reflecting its evolution over time. The well-preserved main tower and courtyard showcase the castle's original strength, while the ornate facades and large windows added by the Maxwells highlight its transformation into a comfortable family home. The castle's location on the Clyde provided vital access to trade and transportation.

Visitors to Newark Castle can explore the various chambers and halls, imagining the daily life of its inhabitants. The castle's museum displays artifacts and exhibits that detail its history and the surrounding area's maritime heritage. The views from the castle walls offer panoramic vistas of the Clyde, emphasizing its historical importance as a gateway to Scotland.

Today, Newark Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. It serves as a valuable educational resource, offering insights into Scottish history, architecture, and maritime culture. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a student, or simply looking for a scenic day trip, Newark Castle provides an engaging and informative experience.
