Visited Old Castle Lachlan in the heart of Argyll after tracing our family line back here from our great granny Peggy Maclachlan. I was also following clues about a possible connection to the Crawfords, and in the local graveyard I started matching dates that made it all click. Found more pieces of our lineage than I expected! We can’t wait to return—especially now that we’ve been asked to write an article for the Lachlan Society in America, which is endorsed by clan chief Euan Maclachlan. Exciting times ahead, and even more reason to keep digging into our family history.

Fantastic piece of history that you can get close to! I would have liked that more of the ruins were accessible. You can climb in to some areas of the ruins but the ground level area is closed off, probably to protect against falling debris. 1 star lost for the closed ground floor. Beautiful setting and nice little stony beaches to explore whilst here. Do follow the signs rather than the maps. Past the caravan park and the chapel there is a free car park with a board walk across the river. In the bay we saw herons fishing and some Oystercatchers.

A small and picturesque ruined castle looking over the beautiful Loch Fyne. The path to the castle from the road/car park has been carefully maintained by members of clan Lachlan without losing its wild feel, and includes a bridge over the Strathlachlan river. There are a few plaques within the ruin that tell some of its history. It is a hidden gem, and is absolutely worth a stop for a short stroll if you’re passing by.

i highly recommend visiting this castle! It's a great place to visit.

This was once the dwelling of my direct ancestor, Lachlan Mor - a great and powerful chieftan; the manliest of manly men with flaming red hair.

I was warned by my great grandfather to never put my hand on the walls of this fortress and utter the sacred words, "Klaatu Barada Nikto". He never said why but I just had to know. Late one night my curiousity got the better of me, and I recited the words...

As I said the last word, a whirlwind appeared, and in it stood Sean Connery who said to me, "Highlander! What you feel is the quickening!" Perplexed I asked the overdressed peacock what was going on. He told me that the sacred words forever sealed my fate to fight others like myself - immortal beings! The only way we could die is if we lose our head by sword.

Connery trained me in the great arts for 100 years. Since he left me I have wandered the Earth seeking out friends and foes alike.

Oh visitors to my ancestral home, hear me! Contribute to the restoration of this castle!

Carry on friends, and tell all your friends about this place!

I now leave you to seek out...

As a McLaughlin was greatly disappointed by the moronic owner and his dangerous dogs, who are running freely. Was quite looking forward to checking out my family ancestral home...but what a disappointment. I would steer well clear of this if you have children as there are 2 large, out of control dangerous dogs with one idiotic spawn of clan leader. When we complained (strongly in fairness) he became abusive and spun us a load of rubbish about it being sign posted as a private footpath (not that that seems relevant when his dogs had just run the length of his garden through bushes in what looked like full attack mode and got within a foot of us snarling and barking). We were pinned to the back of the path. It is a public footpath or is not signed private. He he did the cheesy get off my land speech...with further abuse not printable here, which just made him look like a sad little man and an embarrassment to the clan i would imagine. WARNING: If you have small children I would avoid as the only reason these dogs didn't attack was because we didn't run...small children would...
