This is a historical house, it is also a private residential property so the tea room is only opened on Friday and Saturday from 10-4pm. The room is exquisite with high ceilings, crown molding, grand piano, the ceiling are beautifully painted with angels and cheribs. The views are of the gardens and the famous Overton bridge that unfortunately dogs jumped from after hearing the cries of children as long ago the house was a maternity hospital and also a Christian commune. The story goes the head of the commune wife had a baby whom he believed was demon possessed & thus took it & threw it from the bridge. So be advised to keep dogs on a leash. You can take food out as you cannot take dogs into the tearoom. The food is all homemade from mac & cheese, to cakes, to fresh brewed coffee or tea. A truely inspirational setting for lunch or just relaxing. I would recommend that young children be supervised at all times as the bridge is 60 foot high & open with steep...
Read moreThis house and grand gardens that lead into the surrounding forest and hills are gloriously beautiful. You can visit the CafÚ at the House which is like walking back in time. The grounds and woodland contain some beautiful specimens of Giant redwood trees and Monkey Puzzle Tree's which, I can only assume were taken from the new world in seed form by the original owner well over 100 years ago. This place now has the grandiouseness of the visionary that had the foresight to give us what the Family intended as a piece of heaven on earth. Enchanting place. Be careful of the steep cliff like area's at the margins of the bottom part of the burn/stream. These are fenced off and safe, but care should be taken if young children are walking or playing. A gorgeous place to visit and amazingly not...
Read moreThis is a brilliant place to visit, the house is beautiful, it was left to the people of Dumbarton so it remains free to visit, there is a cafe in the house that is run by the church group, this has limited opening hours, however the woodland walks can be accessed at any time. There is quite a dramatic waterfall and gorge located within the forest walk and loads of wild garlic growing along the sides of the path. Just be wary if you are walking dogs over the bridge as there have been several cases of dogs jumping over the walls and falling into the...
