A highlight of our time in Gairloch. We were taken out on a working fishing boat, around the bays and islands, stopping for Ian and Finlay to haul in the creels. Each creel (mostly) brings new treasures. Our hosts Ian and son Finlay, were lively and informative, telling us all about the creatures of sea, while passing them round to hold! If you’re interested in the natural world this is a must, it’s definitely not just for kids. We ended the tour with a lunch, eating the seafood just caught in Ian’s family home. Delicious, brilliant value and a truly memorable afternoon. Thanks so much ☺️

What a great experience. The trip departs from dry island which you get to from just up past the distillery. Parking is very limited so best to arrive early and find a spot as you may have a ten minute walk across to the island on the floating bridge. We saw: brown crab, velvet crab, lobster, langoustine, flounder, conga eel (baby), seals, scorpion fish, star fish and more. Our two and five year old enjoyed holding the creatures. Well worth it and such a great job by the team! Dogs are allowed, safety very serious so our two little ones were very safe as well as being fully involved.

Having walked across the pontoon bridge, and stepping into the world of the Famous Five, it seemed, we departed Dry Island and the family home. A lovely trip out on Iain’s family boat to retrieve some shellfish pots and the catch! Along the way, he explained a bit about the fishing business and some local history. A fun character, assisted by one of his daughters and the family dog 😁 Highly recommend for all ages

Not too impressed... Shellfish safaris were recommended in the welcome pack for a holiday cottage we were staying at in Gairloch, both for brief expeditions and to purchase seafood.

I purchased 1Kg of Langoustines from Jess at Poolewe market. The portion looked quite small even to the untrained eye, but in the absence of any weighing facilities we ended up taking the langoustines at £25/kg. I was even cheekily told that I was lucky not to have to pay for either the carrier bag or the styrofoam box into which they were placed. Upon arriving home we weighted the langoustines on a kitchen scale, and found we had been sold 590g of langoustines for £25. I notified Jess, who did text back with a generous offer of partial refund of £15, but that missed the point somewhat: the langoustine lunch was minuscule, by the time Jess returned my call the weekly market was closed and I didn't wish to send my full name and bank account details to someone who had already pulled a fast one on me. On that basis I wouldn't be able to recommend...

We went out with Ian last year and had a fantastic experience! Learned a lot about marine life, birds, about the life of fisherman and the local area and stories.olentynof opportunity to get your hands wet and get close and personal with langustines, baby flatfish and we even hauled out an octopus! Best of all we got two brown crabs to take come and we cooked them on the camping cooke and it was absolutely delicious! Can only recommend to anyone who wants to see and do something different! Note this is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs as access to Dry Island is down some steps and over a...

We wrote to Ian several times and said that we would like to book a place if the shellfish Safari were running on Thursday, 15 May. We confirmed this with him one week before by email. We did not receive any confirmation of where we should go or at what time so we rang up early on the morning of 15 May to find out. The phone was answered by a gentleman who told us Ian and Jess were away in Inverness and not running Shellfish Safaris currently, as both boats were out of action. This was very disappointing. We could not understand why Ian had not told us this one week before when we...
