What a strange experience walking around this old Barracks. Which is still in operation and occupied by working troops. A great walk around with a playback device that gives you great wee snippets of information about various elements of the Fort. It has some lovely views of the Moray Forth. And if you're lucky, you might see dolphins. We didn't, but we did see a young seal. The museum is absolutely packed with the military history of the various Scottish regiments. There is a nice wee cafe also situated within the fort. There is plenty of free parking outside the fort. Odd fact, they have a tree (a spanish fir?) opposite the museum that was brought back from Spain around the 1800. Highly recommended.

This was a visit to Fort George and thr Highlander Museum is included in the visit. I paid £10 for entrance which was extremely good value considering what you get to see. It was a terribly wet day, so I made for the museum as it was inside. There is so much to learn and take in you could easily spend the whole day. The museum charts the history of various regiments and the various wars they fought through. It is a truly humbling experience. It is a tribute to those who have taken time to get this museum together as well as the stories of those who served and gave their lives for our country. Well worth a visit, highly recommended. We visited Fort George and the Highlanders Museum while on holiday near Inverness. We only planned to have a quick look, and stayed for about 4 hours! Fascinating place, incredible 18th century architecture, well-laid out historic displays in some of the buildings, very informative, the museum was so extensive I don't think we saw it all, nice café serving sandwiches, cakes, etc, friendly staff (and over-friendly seagull) - and we saw dolphins swimming by!

Visited on behalf of my father-in-law who is tracing his family ancestry in the Black Isle - and I was truly astonished by how fascinated I was by the history of the Fort and the regiments whose histories are displayed! This sort of thing isn't my usual field of interest but I could happily have spent longer in the museum had we not arrived so late in the afternoon. The staff are really welcoming and the displays are impressive and don't neglect the 'human' side of being a serving Forces member. To see so many Victoria Cross awards in one place is humbling. The rest of the Fort is well worth spending time exploring with fabulous views across to the Black Isle. We shall return and spend more time there - and I whole-heartedly recommend that you do the same if military history is of...

Fort George is a great visit, however if it is a cold day on the day you visit be sure to wrap up warmer as the fort lies on the coast and is a step colder. The site is home to active serving military personnel who you will see either on guard duty or doing their daily tasks. Two military policemen stopped to answer a question from my 7 year old son which made his day. Mostly the personnel are busy with their task but as pleasant. The museum paints vividly the picture of the British army in the region both past and present and it's a great learning experience. There's lots to see and take in. The cafe is great also and believe me when I say they are correct about their famous bacon rolls!...
