No doubt this is a fantastic part of the valley heading from Sheffield on the A57 and if you walk far enough up through the forest path you can head out up onto the Derbyshire Peaks although this is a proper days walk or overnight wild camp. The parking facilities at the small main car park at the Dams is very poor ( probably 15 cars ) as usual no adequate bins or facilities meaning this popular tourist spot can sometimes be littered up with rubbish and human waste and products. The main path at one time used to be open to traffic but is now closed . From the Dams you can have an hours walk upwards through the forest and if you know the route you can finish at The Three Merry Lads for excellent food and good real ales. The once lush forest has now been pillaged of it's huge pine trees supposedly due to a deadly disease spreading throughout the UK's tree life ( echos of Covid here) and not of course due to the huge Government funded grants for forestry work and replanting. This means the walk has lost some or most of it's wild feel. Wild deer roamed freely here amongst the once abundant tree and vegetation but now have moved further towards Derbyshire. The bird and wildlife population of this area has been hit badly by the felling especially seen as the works ran through the season. However, still a beautiful place and of course nature shall return to the area once business is done. The top car park is closed for works ( I presume ) The Dam itself is gorgeous 😍 with visiting birds throughout the year. The deeper forest was once a bat haven in the evenings but these seem to also have diminished in numbers. Heading back down towards Rivelin you come to a car park ( bigger and busier) on the A57 fork. Park up here and head over the road down the lower narrow footpath about 10 minutes walk to a popular plunge pool looks filthy this is due to sewage and the surface run off from the A57 through the drains and into the river. There are outlet pipes that run from the edge of the water. The Dams are an excellent place and well worth a visit, good both summer and winter.

Fox hagg to the left, wyming brook to the right, a small well looked after car park. It's easy to get away from everything for hours.
