St. Columba's Isle is an ancient burial ground for 28 clan chiefs as well as the site of a church which was active for about 400 years starting around 1079. It's easy enough to find, parking is good. There's no entry and very little signage. A well-marked trail takes you across a bridge over the River Snizort and then you enter this island of incredible peace. Worldly noises die away, and you are in a spot of lush greens and medieval grave slabs and stones. Because it is largely untouched, even by sheep, i found what i would call 'rice lilies' here in upstate NY, but actually it's a native orchid, shyly tucked into the grass. i believe it's Gymnadenia borealis or Heath Fragrant Orchid. i don't know how rare it is; it's new to me and i was...

St. Columba’s Isle is a hidden gem that we absolutely loved exploring. The peaceful atmosphere and the sense of history make it a truly special place. Walking among the centuries-old graves, with the river gently flowing nearby, felt like stepping back in time.

A tip for future visitors: Google Maps gets you close, but you’ll need to walk through the gate just after the stone bridge to reach the island itself.

I was confused for a little bit when I was on the opposite side of the island when there was no crossing or bridge over but eventually, I found it.

This little island is full of history with a vibrant and ghostly feel to it. There were also fascinating old graves of Templar knights dating back a thousand years ago. When I left this place, my mind left me wondering, who were these people and what were...
