St. Columba's Isle is an ancient burial ground for 28 clan chiefs as well as the site of a church which was active for about 400 years starting around 1079. It's easy enough to find, parking is good. There's no entry and very little signage. A well-marked trail takes you across a bridge over the River Snizort and then you enter this island of incredible peace. Worldly noises die away, and you are in a spot of lush greens and medieval grave slabs and stones. Because it is largely untouched, even by sheep, i found what i would call 'rice lilies' here in upstate NY, but actually it's a native orchid, shyly tucked into the grass. i believe it's Gymnadenia borealis or Heath Fragrant Orchid. i don't know how rare it is; it's new to me and i was...
