The Half Ghost of Spofforth Castle
In the middle of a little village of Spofforth in North Yorkshire, rests the ruins of Spofforth Castle. While the castle has 13th century foundations most of what structurally remains today is from the 15th century. The castle, which was dismantled in the 17th century, currently remains virtually unnoticed and unvisited with the possible exception of a resident ghost. For those who do visit Spofforth Castle, there is a rather cold and empty feeling when walking around the ramparts, almost as if it is filled with some great sorrow.
"It occasionally happens that people approaching the ruins are startled by a female entity of a bluish-white hue that appears momentarily on top of the tower. Suddenly she will throw herself groundward, the hideous spectacle of the plummeting phantom made even more gruesome by the realization that only the upper half of her body is visible. The lower section chooses to remain in whatever ethereal domain her journey begins. Who she is, or was, or why she felt the need to kill herself, nobody has ever been able to ascertain, because she has the annoying habit of disappearing at the moment of impact."
This ghost story was taken from the book "Haunted Castles of Britain...
Read moreAttended on a weekday, early evening. Google said the castle was closed but there’s open access to the castle and grounds at all times.
Castle is set back on the edge of a well kept green surrounded by houses and mature trees. It was quiet with only one couple visiting at the same time. The castle is dog friendly but there’s not a lot of shade so maybe not recommended on a hot day. We spent around 20 minutes looking around the ruins. Would be a great place for a picnic on a nice day/evening but I wouldn’t plan a whole day out there. There are not really any other amenities near by.
There is no set parking for the castle so you are forced to park on the roadside, but it wasn’t an issue as it...
Read moreLovely little Castle which took about an hour to stroll around and read the boards and take pics. Shame that it isn't manned and that no toilet nearby, nearest about 1/2 a mile down road at a local pub called the Railway, although it does state that one board. No good when you have driven a couple of hours and need to spend a penny. Otherwise nice grounds, only one or two picnic benches and even though signs said dogs not allowed, there were dogs in the grounds, but not surprising as English Heritage book says dogs allowed, so the rules contradict each other. So wouldn't advise to have a picnic on the grass. Would have got 4* but for loo issue, dog rules and lack of...
