If you’re one of those people who are really empathetic and enjoy the company of animals I DON’T really recommend. The birds, although rescued and probably in better conditions than they were before, are kept for showcasing purposes. The cages aren’t great either. Some of the birds are just chained to some poles. I appreciate the owners are doing what they can, that the initiative comes from a place of caring, that they’re trying to educate the public, and that they get assessed yearly and pass, etc; that’s all good. All I’m saying is I stayed 10 minutes and left in tears. Consider it more of a trigger alert.. Also there’s SO MANY of them!! it’s just a sad sad experience.
Adendum: I see you’re very defensive about my review which doesn’t really help anyone. I didn’t come and “air my concerns” because I was upset. Now, if you had read my review from a less defensive perspective; you wound have seen its mainly meant as advice for people that like me, can be triggered. I think that’s understandable. This is not about you. It’s about the birds and how seeing them made me feel. What was I expecting? Well a sanctuary.. I’m sorry you don’t have the funds for that but please do not imply I just go around the world doing nothing but pointing my finger. I support many animal welfare and environmental charities, so you don’t have to explain that to me. I’m also sorry you cannot appreciate that my reactions (as yours) come from a...
Read moreFirst of all, I'd like to say that £5 entrance is selling yourself short. Especially if there's flying display that day. Think might be a good idea to up your prices, atleast £8-10 (maybe higher on days there is flying displays as these alone are worth more than £5) Especially with struggles your facing due to covid.
There isn't an awful lot but what is, is definitely worth seeing. Especially the flying shows. The birds are amazing and the owner is very informative and very down to earth, you can see the love he has for animals and they are very well cared for. It is family run which is lovely to see. All animals have been rescued by the family and there's a Plaque with thier story of how they joined them by each enclosure, which was great although very sad at same time, can leave you being ashamed and discusted to be human. There's also farm animals and u can buy some feeds for a very small price to feed them. Small selection of birds of paradise which was great too. There's also a lake and woodland walk. The cafe was closed due to pingdemic which was a shame but understandable. Would definitely return and highly recommended although I'd suggest trying to go on days that aren't raining or to windy as flying displays for obvious reasons are weather permitted as they aren't...
Read moreFantastic place to visit! Some of the most amazing birds here loved and cared for by a family who run the sanctuary, you can see that there is so much love for these birds and they all have there own story, some sad and some down right disgusting but it's good to see they have found a forever home here. Seeing the peregrine falcon flying free on the displays was a highlight for me, my only criticism is a good one, up your price, as I felt the price didn't reflect the experience, I would be happy to pay atleast £10 to get in especially as I can return for 50% off, the lovely guy who does the bird displays is full of knowledge and was so friendly and nice to chat too very down to earth and well experienced with the birds and you could see the loving relationships he has built with them, such a lovely place to visit, there's even farm animals for the kids to feed, I wish I could of gotten closer to the cockatoos as there were really talkative and i love parrots and birds full stop, but I also understand that these birds come from all sorts of backgrounds so it's for everyone's safety, especially the birds, I wish we had time to return as I cant sayenough good things...
