Not a safe family bike ride — misleading route description

Be cautious if you’re planning this ride with young children. We were expecting a traffic-free route, but that’s only true from Yatton to near Winscombe. After that: • There’s only a narrow, overgrown bike lane, which forced us into oncoming traffic — absolutely not safe. • Around Axbridge, the route involves crossing A roads, which are not clearly marked on maps or signage.

This might be fine for confident adult cyclists, but it’s not suitable for families with young kids. Our 5-year-old was put at real risk, and we wouldn’t do this again unless the route is properly upgraded or at least accurately described.

If this had been honestly labelled, we’d rate the Yatton to Axbridge section 5 stars — but the current misleading description...

Lovely place for walkers and cyclists (if you're walking you have to watch out, cyclists have right of way!). Can get quite busy with dog walkers, particularly around the villages. But the whole walk goes from cheddar to Congresbury (with a few spots where you have to go on the road) which is a good project for an afternoon or a day. Goes through Thatcher's apple trees - see the most famous local product! There's a basic tea room at Sandford next to Sanford Station which, when open, is good for a cuppa. Parts can get pretty muddy in the winter, so better prepared with sturdy shoes! But in the summer you can easily wander along in sandals if you aren't going very far. Not brilliant views but you can be a bit nosey and see people's houses from a...

Great route for cycling or walking. We parked at Axbridge picnic area which gave direct access to the Strawberry Line between Axbridge and Winscombe.

The path was pretty quiet when we visited. Everyone was courteous and gave each other plenty of space.

It was mostly flat heading from the picnic area to Sandford (7 mile return). Sandford Station railway heritage centre was a good point to stop for refreshments. This route also included a long tunnel that is fun to cycle through (although a sign one way said for cyclists...
