Second time visited today. Was hoping to catch a glimpse of Salmons but there were none. A local dog walker informed us that water level in the river was too low at the moment. And so October end and November more likely to be conducive to see jumping Salmon. The satnav led us straight here and we missed the pay and display parking closeby. And as we got to the bridge, there was little space to turnaround our Estima. So, I managed to cautiously maneuver through the bridge to the other side... Don't try this unless you are very confident driving through very tight spaces or you have a guide to help you drive through. On the other side of the bridge are a couple of parking spots which is where we parked and with hardly any cars around, we were ok for the duration of our trip. The terrain is a mix of mud, grass and rocks and can be very slippery especially during wetter conditions, like today. Grippy boots recommended. Was an early morning visit, so we did not see any swimmers. We did meet a Duke of Edinburgh group walking the riverside trail. Stainforth Foss itself is just an amazing sight to behold. Last time, we were able to catch some small fish from the little pot holes by the river and released them back, which the kids enjoyed. The weather was too wet today to stick around for long though. Happy that I got this done while this short stay...

Park in the village car park and it's an easy half mile-ish walk to the falls. £3.50 for 2 hours and £5.50 for the day. If you are only doing the salmon falls then 2 hours is plenty. If you go the Catrigg waterfall you'll need a full day ticket. I wouldn't recommend going down the lane near the falls to park. It is narrow with a sharp bend. Parking is very limited once you get there plus the walk from the village car park is pleasant enough. Follow the signs from the bottom of the carpark. When you get to the little road turn left and follow it down to the bridge. Take a left through the field and you're there. It can be tricky here especially if it's been raining. Very muddy and the limestone is slippy! Keep a close eye on children. It can be dangerous near the edge. The salmon were abundant! Jumping every four to five minutes! Large and small. What an experience! Well...
Read moreWhat a fantastic spot. An accidental find during our stay in the Yorkshire dales. Bit tricky to park. There is a small pay and display carpark with toilets. But the carpark was full. Did manage to park on the outskirts of the village without being in anyone’s way. Couple of minutes walk to the falls. Had been a bit wet so the walk across the field near the fall was tricky as I only had trainers on. But it was so worth it. October time is when the salmon head back up stream to spawn. What a spectacular sight it was. Difficult to photograph but managed a few shots. Even if the salmon had not been there it’s worth a visit. Lots of lovely walks about. Get ur walking shoes on. Bring a lunch. Make a day of this...
