Well worth a visit, lots of open space for a walk and always plenty of swan, ducks and Canadian geese around the various pond and lakes within the park
Herrington Country Park is one of the largest parks in Sunderland. It is overlooked by Penshaw Monument.
The park was established on the former site of Herrington Colliery which closed in 1985. Work began in January 1996. The park opened in 2002 and covers almost 200 hectares and is now a wildlife and recreational area.
The park includes:
Lake - with model boating and a smaller nature pond.
Sculpture Village - inspired by Durham Cathedral and church spires in Newbottle, Great Lumley and West Rainton.
'Wind Seat' - group of seats by ‘strata’, commissioned by Sunderland City Council
'Lions Seat' - commissioned by Washington Lions
'John’s Rock' - 40 tonne rock, named after John Leathley, and has the faces of ‘ten men’ reflecting the area's mining past
Miners Memorial Garden, includes the pit wheel, opened on 11th July 2004.
'Sight Lines' - a stone circle on the hill with seven steel sighting boxes
'Greenheart Bridge' - by William Pym and commissioned by the Great North Forest

The fresh cakes, scorns cheese or fruit in the very popular cafe meets all my pleasure. The different fresh home made corn beef slices, steak & ale , lamb & mint mince & potato are to die for. This place as a standing waiting que to get a seat inside , it's that good you cannot get in there because of all the senior citizen which use this place daily. Having a lunch there followed by a cream cake will leave you that full you can't drive home. Their peach Melba's are to die for. FANTASTiC place and only 2 miles from my home. We have been here mamy times always first class 100% and not expensive very well prices there is a fantastic log burner to keep the place warm.....car park always full .
