This area is a beautiful National Nature Reserve (NNR), designated SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) as a significant area of protected lowland heath which supports a wide variety of species of flora and fauna. 3 notable bird species, the Nightjar, Dartford warbler and Woodlark use heathland to breed, leading to the designation of the common as part of the Thames Basin Heath Special Protection Area (SPA). It is home to 5 of the 6 British reptile species including the rare sand lizard, and is the only mainland site in UK with the rare ant, Formica rufibarbis - the red barbed/bearded ant. Sadly the constant background noise from the M3 detracts from any tranquillity that the area once had and the ever present rubbish left behind by visitors is a constant eyesore.
The common can get quite busy at times and being open heathland for the most part it makes it easy to see other people from a distance which only accentuates the feeling of being one of many on the common at any given time.
