Lovely, eyecatching memorial to 158 Squadron, designed by artist Peter Naylor. It stands magnificent + proud, yet poignant, on the roadside, on the site of the former RAF Lissett airfield. Novera Energy built a wind farm here, with its project's tagline "Propellers back at Lissett". Of the twelve wind turbines, eleven are named after aircraft: Friday the 13th, Lily Marlene, Jane, Git up dem Stairs, Goofy's Gift, Xpress Delivery, Zombie, Minnie the Moocher, Blondie, the Menace + Maori Chief. The 12th turbine commemorates the six airmen who died in an explosion in the bomb dump on 2nd July, 1943. The seven 8ft tall airmen are constructed from 15mm thick steel. On both sides of the figures are the names of all 851 members of 158 Squadron who died. The squadron's insignia is echoed in the ground at their feet. The sculpture stands in a mini wildflower meadow, with a memorial bench alongside. There is also a visitors' book that you can sign. It's tucked away in the compartment on the sign stand, even has pens in the packet. I thought that was a nice touch. Brave men + women, deservedly honoured in this moving tribute. RIP....
