you’re stood right among 3,500 years of history. Standing in Birkrigg, you’re literally on the same ground Bronze Age people used for their ceremonies.

If you want to honour the place with a ritual, keep it simple, respectful, and natural – something that connects you to the landscape and those who stood there before you.

🌞 Sun & Shadow Ritual (ancient connection)

If the sun is shining, stand so your shadow falls into the circle.

Imagine your shadow joining all those who have stood here before.

Raise your arms slowly to the sky, acknowledging the sun (the Bronze Age people were very tied to solar cycles).

Lower them, grounding your palms to the earth.

🌿 A Prayer for Birkrigg

*"Spirits of this land, Ancestors who walked before me, Keepers of stone, sea, and sky — I stand in this circle with respect.

These comprised a pear-shaped piece of stone thought to have been a pestle for grinding pigments, an oyster-shaped stone with a handle on one side and a carefully flaked out central depression which was thought to have been used as a palate for colours, and a piece of red ochre which was possibly used...

Birkrigg Stone Circle is a Bronze Age stone circle located on Birkrigg Common. The circle is quite small but the views from the common are magnificent - you get a complete panoramic view over the Lakeland Hills and all the way across Morecambe Bay. The best way to reach Birkrigg Stone Circle is to pass Bardsea Alpacas and take the next right - this road will lead you directly onto the common & my husband and I could see the stone circle before we'd even parked the car. It was easy to walk to and the sheep didn't mind...
