Visited Chesters Roman site (second time) but decided to take some extra time to visit the Roman Bridge abutment that are visible on the other side of the River from Chesters. If you are driving, come out of Chesters, turn right, turn left at the roundabout just up the road. On the left, about 100m, you can park in a lay-by. From here, walk back to the roundabout. Go over the road bridge straight in front of you. As you get to the other side, there is a gate on the right side. Go through the gate and follow the easy path/cinder track for about 5 minutes. There is an information board when you reach the site and are looking down towards it. The lower foundation stones are in great condition and look like they have only been there a matter of decades, never mind almost 2000 years! There are lots of random pieces of stone laid everywhere and some nice small columns laid out. The actual site is only small and can be quite wet and slippery, but for someone who loves seeing what the romans left behind (like me), then it is worth the extra half hour.

I loved it. You can see the remains from Chester's Fort, but to visit you have to find a parking spot near the George Hotel or Riverside Kitchen. You can always park up along the road near the roundabout and walk across the modern bridge to the hiking path on the south side of the river It's an easy, mostly flat, mile walk to the site. Well worth the effort. Roman engineering is stunning, and both the original wall structure as well as the expanded cargo addition later are stunning. This was all almost 2000 ago! Highly recommended

These remains were first located in 1860. They form one of the most impressive and massive masonry structures to be seen on Hadrian's Wall. There is a male fertility symbol carved into the northern face of the eastern abutment. Also part of UNESCO, really glad we saw this, very interesting. A nice walk down to it, only problem was the parking.

Just on the other side of the Tyne to Chester Roman Fort it's worth a walk across the new bridge to see the Roman one, it about a five minute walk from the road across farm land which is fenced off from the live stocks. But towards the bridge you have to go through some gates that the sheep like to hang round so it's a bit mucky there. The remains of the bridge it self is just the Abutment and some stone work retrieved from the river. It's a nice peacefully spot with a Nice view of Chesters Bath House. It's free entry so if you are interested in Roman history and visiting Chesters it's...
