Took the open air Explorer bus from Eastbourne band stand, with interesting commentary of key places en route. For £10 all day hop on hop off ticket, an excellent way to visit a number of key sites around Eastbourne. Birling Gap is a fascinating accessible part of the South Downs, from where you can walk across the downs, or just sit & relax, watch the ponies grazing, the birds, butterflies & varied flora of the chalky landscape. An excellent National Trust cafe, gift shop, & visitor centre - friendly staff, excellent coffee & usual cakes etc. NT pay & display car park. Explorer bus runs past every 30 mins, so soon back to Eastborne, & an opportunity to view the town as we descended...
Read moreAt Birling Gap, the chalk cliffs between the Seven Sisters to the West (probably the most attractive section of the Southeast coast) and Beachy Head to the East (the highest of the chalk cliffs) dip to about ten metres above sea level. Above the cliffs, there is a National Trust café with a large car park. A staircase leads down to the pebbly beach underneath the chalk cliffs, which is a rather wild and wonderful place. From there you can see into a long stretch of the Seven Sisters from below.
