One of the most beautiful, peaceful, well maintained forests out there. Although not an old forest, established 70-80 years ago as a kind of nursery to see what could grow on chalky soil, Friston Forest has become a beacon of hope and a magical place where young and old alike can find respite, outstanding nature and an almost magical place to wonder and enjoy. Not only is it a green paradise for all sorts of trees, including firs, beeches, oaks, rowan and others, but also hosts exquisite butterflies, insects and roe deer, which you are more than likely to encounter on your ramblings. At this point I do have to mention that the butterflies here are an extraordinary experience. There are several kinds of blues, including the elusive adonis and chalk hill blues, as well as other lesser known although equally magnificent butterflies. The Forest is kept in impeccable condition, with facilities such as bbq and toilets that are kept in impeccable state. The forestry commission do an incredible job in keeping the forest in a faultless state, maintaining grounds and cutting back paths. My only gripe with Friston Forest does not have anything to do with Forest itself, my issues lay with the local farmers who seem to think they own the place; the bird deterrent was banging day and night for 2 months, every 20 mins, scaring the nesting birds and predators, and indeed us ramblers. It was horrendous ! These lands should be reclaimed and reforested, look what we can do in a...
Read moreIt's not a very old forest but if you venture a bit further in, it can be quite nice and unspoiled. However, just of late, the forestry people have chopped down loads and loads of trees.. Thus changing the forest - scape significantly. It's far more open in many places and of course all the stumps and wood - chopping debris doesn't look nice at all. Also watch your dogs, cos they can hurt their legs if they are not the careful type whilst they're exploring the undergrowth which is littered with fallen branches etc. The works have also partially left big ruts in paths, which can make it extra muddy, wet or awkward to negotiate. I'm not complaining because it's a managed forest, I'm just saying it's not very nice...
Read moreThis is a stunning location. The toilets were well kept and there was ample car parking (for a reasonable cost). There were options in terms of walks with hills surrounding the forest or through the first itself. The local journey to the forest is also pretty with two chalk images to look out for and idilic village scenes. There was the opportunity to book and use the bbqs set up there and there were tables for picnics or space to put up chairs and tables. Dog friendly and a good space to share time with...
