Read moreA beautiful place to spend a few hours, ample free parking at various locations on the road around the reservoir, I would recommend the formal car parks at the northern end (Norsworthy Bridge) where access to the arboretum is possible and gives a short easy walk through the plantation, some of it on board walks adjacent to streams. Dartmoor ponies roam freely in the area, take care and time on the roads, there’s no need to rush. It is possible to do a circular walk encompassing the whole reservoir, but some sections are on or adjacent to the road. At the south eastern corner a small peninsular juts into the lake where the ruins of a small manor house (Longstone Manor) can be found. The southern edge of the reservoir is formed by Burrator dam. Nearby are the remains of an old open stone conduit which once fed water to Plymouth. Toilet facilities are available near the dam, but I’m not aware of any catering facilities – take a flask with you. Plenty of scope for a full day’s hike or just an hour or so at a...
Read moreA very pleasent place. Resivour with a dam on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Not exactly a tourist destination (it's quite out of the way to someone who lives in a typically urban environment) but it's a lovely place to walk. You can walk right down by the water's edge but watch out as there are geese that seem strangely coordinated! To my knowledge there aren't any cafes of the sort around here but I did see an Ice Cream truck by the dam, which is in turn where most people park their cars. I walked to the resivour from a place I was staying on Burrator Road. Only a 12-15 minute walk although there aren't any footpaths towards it that I know of; I walked by the side of the road.
Overall a nice, quite place to spend an...
