Lovely Stroll here today. Parked at wetheral train station then went down 99 steps to the right of the station then once at the bottom head right again and follow the road around passing a row of lovely cottages, church yard (raised) and then some super modern houses, following them around to the river bank. Once on the river bank there are various paths that pretty much lead to the same place, the caves being 2 ,thirds of the way down and set at the lower level to the river (as the highest path must be 60 foot above the river with a wooded drop) and semi hidden if not paying proper attention. The woods are ambient and ancient. The drops in places are brutal. But paths are easy to stick too. I would not say this is suitable for prams or similar. And small children should be closely watched in places. Dogs would easily manage. The caves are always open, and are an insight into life then. The walls are lined with dates and names, the most are dated 1800,s. Along the way there are visitor boards with information about other sight seeing places along the way. This isn't a hard walk. But it is well...

Great walk up to the caves, Three rock cut chambers, connected by a 14th century gallery which was formerly roofed, called "St. Constantines's Cell", and by the local population "Wetheral Safeguard". They are generally considered to have been a place of concealment or safety, particularly during Scottish incursions. Hodgson suggests that the three chambers may be as old as the time of the Romans, who quarried here, the caves may have been improved by the monks. Each chamber is rectangular and measures approximately 6...

Steep slopes next to the water, you can take a top path so you miss a lot of it. Then walk down so your not to close to the side. There's two footpaths to it, so it's easy to find. Not as magical as I wanted it to be, but still worth a visit if nothing to do. There 3 rooms that are just square, and some windows. Wear walking boots, not muddy. Stop off at the gate house as that was on the way. Loads of free parking in...
