Lilford Park A Hidden Gem in Leigh

Nestled in the heart of Leigh lies a true treasure waiting to be discovered: Lilford Park. From the moment you step foot into this green oasis, you're greeted with a sense of tranquility that immediately transports you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The park's lush greenery, expansive lawns, and serene lake create the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll, a family picnic, or simply unwinding with a good book. Whether you're looking to reconnect with nature or simply escape the stresses of modern life, Lilford Park offers a peaceful retreat for visitors of all ages.

But it's not just the natural beauty that sets Lilford Park apart – it's the sense of community that permeates every corner of this space. From the friendly smiles of fellow park-goers to the array of events and activities hosted throughout the year, there's a palpable sense of warmth and camaraderie that makes every visit feel like coming home.

And let's not forget about the park's amenities, which are second to none. Whether you're in need of playgrounds to entertain the little ones, sports facilities to stay active, or simply a quiet spot to enjoy a picnic, Lilford Park has you covered.

In short, Lilford Park is more than just a park – it's a sanctuary, a gathering place, and a community hub all rolled into one. So whether you're a local looking for a peaceful retreat or a visitor in search of an authentic slice of Leigh life, be sure to pay a visit to Lilford Park. Trust me, you won't be...

Lilford Park (managed by Wigan council) is a varied attraction featuring a child’s playground, open fields great for dog walking and a disc golf course (review to follow shortly)

It is well kept, with appropriately placed bins, and a public toilet conveniently located centrally within the park (closed on our visit at 5:30 pm Friday). The car park is adequately sized but I can see it becoming overcrowded at peak times. There are well tended flowerbeds lining the paths, tastefully protected by a metal fence. Untended wildlife-friendly areas are also scattered abundantly which is of course important in urban parks. There are sculptures placed nicely around the park.

There is a range of in-park gym equipment near the children’s playground, suitable for a work out with distanced child supervision.

The children’s playground has a range of equipment, though I would say it’s tailored slightly towards rotating rides than traditional playground climbing frames and slides (though these are available). There is no zip line, which is admittedly not an expectation but a luxury.

I enjoy rotating rides so this park was well suited to myself...

Lilford park is a great place to visit with or without kids. There is a decent amount of free parking and a good sized playground with equipment for a variety of ages. The gardens are well looked after and there are plenty of picnic areas. There is a local volunteer group that helps to look after the park and they make a considerable impact. The best bit of the park is Lilford woods, there is a loop path through that takes about half an hour that will easily allow a pram of there hasn't been much rain. On a sunny day you're almost guaranteed an ice cream van also 😁 well...

Lilford Park is a great place to visit...great for walking dogs aswell. Very spacious...Has a park for kids to play on, outside tap for the dogs to get watered, a defibrillator near the children's park. Plenty of different pathways, a remembrance garden for local folk who died with Covid, beautiful. There are the woods to walk through, with an array of different trees, Holly, Red bark, Silverbirch... I went with my family including grandchildren, we spent hours here, we took snacks and drinks, and carrier bags for our rubbish...and the parking was free...10/10

I have know Lilford Part , or as we knew it as children back in the day as Lileford Woods all my life and over the years has had many changes. Today the Children’s play areas are back complying with todays Health and safety and walks have been added for people who just like to walk with or without the dogs. It always good to have a walk through the woods summer or Winter time. I notice that Roly Poly hill has disappeared to make way for the guided bus way, but I still consider the Park and the woods one of Leigh’s best open outdoor gems.
